Hermes’ Blues shows in monochrome, cropped views of Bible passages telling the parable of the soils. Each of the three panels contains elements of one of the synoptic gospels’ presentation of the story from a particular version of the Bible, complete with footnotes, cross references, and commentary, all attempting to explain or help us interpret a passage which is about interpretation or understanding. The title, Hermes’ Blues refers to the root of hermeneutic, named for the messenger, Hermes. Each panel is painted a particular blue pigment: Matthew is indigo, Mark is Ultramarine, and Luke is Pthalocyanine.
